Beneficial Scholarly Seminar

On September 24th, 2009 an international scholarly seminar took place in the Slovak National Museum – Museum of Rusyn Culture in Prešov. The seminar, which was named Július Stavrovský –Popradov: life and work analysis, was held on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of his death. The event was realised by the Rusyn Cultural-Educational Association of A. Dukhnovich, in cooperation with the Museum of Rusyn Culture and the Slovak Association of Rusyn Organisations located in Prešov and with the financial support of the Slovak Ministry of Culture within the programme “Culture of Ethnic Minorities 2009” and the international project “Activity – New Historic Era of Rusyns in the World”. The event was opened with an exhibition of material showing the life and work of J. Stavrovský-Popradov and his contemporaries, accompanied by a detailed commentary by Mgr. Gabriel Beskyd, the head of the association. Afterwards, those in attendance were welcomed by PhDr. Oľga Glosíková, DrCs., the head of the museum, followed by G. Beskyd, who opened the seminar. The following guests presented their papers: Valerij Paďak, CSc., the head of the Research Centre of Carpathian Studies in Uzhhorod, who spoke about Július Stavrovský-Popradov as portrayed in the Uzhhorod newspaper “New World“ in 1871 – 1872; PhDr. Anna Plišková, PhD., the head of the Institute of Rusyn Language and Culture, Prešov University (IRLC PU) on the issue of the Rusyn language in the life and work of J. Stavrovský-Popradov; PhDr. Mária Maľcovská, an assistant at IRLC PU, who spoke about J. Stavrovský-Popradov as a defender of the Cyril-Method identity of Rusyns in the satirical work “The Weirdo of Vojčice“; PhDr. Stanislav Konečný, CSc., a historian at the Institute of Social Sciences, Slovak Academy of Science in Košice, who presented the topic of J. Stavrovský-Popradov and the Carpathian Rusyns in the period of dualism; Mgr. Gabriel Beskyd from Prešov presented a paper on particularities in the evaluation of the life and work of J. Stavrovský-Popradov by historians and philologists in various historical-political periods (Dr. M. Beskyd, doc. Dr. H. Rudlovčáková, doc. Dr. Š. Doboš) and the final paper was presented by the head of the Rusyn Institute of Science in Budapest, who briefly introduced J. Stavrovský-Popradov in the literary-research work of Dr. Mikuláš Beskyd. After the official part of the seminar, an informal ceremonial part followed, where those in attendance presented their gifts and flowers and wished all the best to the main organiser of the event, Mgr. Gabriel Beskyd, who, on September 28th, celebrated his 80th birthday.
