Earl Laborec in Medzilaborce

On July 19th, 2009 the students of the Elementary Music School of Alexander Ľubimov in Medzilaborce, under the directorship of the school’s principle Mgr. Ľudmila Šteckova, prepared a programme of music, song and artistic recital, by which they presented the legendary Earl Laborec, the ruler of the Carpathian Rusyns, who was imprisoned by imperial Hungarian troops in the very region where Medzilaborce stands today and was hanged directly above the Laborec river. The river, as well as the town, was named after the ruler. This inspired the students to present another significant personality in the hall of the community centre as a part of the 3rd year of the project “Great Rusyns”. This year’s programme was named “Earl Laborec and Medzilaborce”. Apart from the students and their parents, the cultural programme was also enriched by folk songs as well as a performance by the local folk group Kamjana.
