Elections and Rusyns

November 14th, 2009 saw elections of representatives for all self-governing regions in Slovakia. We are mainly interested in the Prešov self-governing region (PSR), as that is where most Rusyns within Slovakia live. Among those elected to the Prešov regional parliament, the following Rusyns are included: Ivan Solej for the Medzilaborce district, Milan Cocuľa and Ján Holodňák for the Svidník district and Nadežda Sirková for the Snina district. We would like to express our congratulations and the hope that they will not forget their Rusyn roots when dealing with cultural-ethnic issues in the parliament. We are sorry that the Prešov district of PSR will not have any Rusyn representatives, although, on the ballot, there were such Rusyn candidates as Fedor Vico, Ing. arch. Slavomír Hirjak, Mário Garbera and Mgr. Peter Krajňák, as well as Bc. Kristián Huňara for the Snina district.
