JUNE 12th BECOMES THE “DAY OF RUSYNS”

June 12th will from now on be celebrated as the Day of Rusyns in Slovakia. The decision was made by means of a poll taken by the readers of „InfoРусина“ (InfoRusyn) аnd „Народных новинок“ (National Newspaper), as well as the visitors to www.rusynacademy.sk This day is connected to the first Slavonic Congress, which took place in Prague on June 12th, 1848, and was also attended by J. M. Hurban. He presented a memorandum in which, for the very first time, the recognition of Slovaks and Rusyns as independent nations was demanded, by which the national revival of Slovaks and Rusyns in Austro-Hungary started. It also relates to June 12th, 1933, when, during the Days of the Rusyn Culture (June 10th – 12th), a memorial to the Rusyn national revivalist Alexander Dukhnovich was unveiled in Prešov. By establishment of this Rusyn holiday, a point in the resolution, which was adopted at the meeting of the World Council of Rusyns, with regard to two membership organisations of the World Congress of Rusyns – the Rusyn Revival in Slovakia and the Slovak Association of Rusyn Organisations – was fulfilled. Next year, the holiday will be celebrated for the very first time.
