Open Days at Prešov University

On September 11th and 14th, 2009 the second year of “Open Days – a presentation of Rusyn culture in all areas of their cultural-social life” was held at the campus of Prešov University (PU), No. 1, 17. Novembra Street.
At the beginning, the well-known Rusyn folk singer Anna Poráčová gave a performance accompanied by Jozef Piroh on the accordion, and created a great atmosphere in the assembly hall. Afterwards, those in attendance were welcomed by PhDr. Anna Plišková, PhD., the Head of the Institute of Rusyn Language and Culture, PU, followed by PhDr. Kvetoslava Koporová, who gave information about their ongoing project. Within the first topic: “Standard Rusyn language, Rusyn organisations, history and religious life of Rusyns in Slovakia”, the following speakers presented their papers: PhDr. Anna PLIŠKOVÁ, PhD., who gave a presentation on Standard Rusyn language in Slovakia, its use in practice and possibilities of university studies; PhDr. Stanislav KONEČNÝ, CSc., who presented a paper on Rusyns in Historical milestones of the second millennium; PhDr. Kvetoslava KOPOROVÁ, who presented Associations and organisations in the process of Rusyn revival; and the topic of Rusyns in the religious area was presented on September, 11th by ThLic. František KRAJŇÁK and by Mgr. Milan JASÍK on September, 14th.
Within the second topic: “Rusyns in the international context, their publishing activities, literature and theatre, the following speakers gave presentations: Mgr. Alexander ZOZUĽÁK who spoke about the World Congress of Rusyns and publishing activities in the Rusyn language after 1989; PhDr. Mária MAĽCOVSKÁ, who spoke about Contemporary Rusyn literature; and Mgr. Marián MARKO, who presented his paper on Present-day Rusyn professional theatre.
On both days, a brief discussion was held, which was, on the first day, participated in by some of the students from L. Stökel Grammar School in Bardejov in attendance, students from T. Vansová Grammar School in Stará Ľubovňa and the Associated School – Business Academy in Svidník; and, on the second day, by students from grammar schools in Snina, Humenné and Medzilaborce. We believe that, at this event, the youth in attendance could absorb a lot of new information about Rusyns and possibilities to study Rusyn language and literature in combination with other subjects at Prešov University and that it will inspire some of them to enrol in Rusyn studies at Prešov University.
The event was organised with the financial support of the Slovak Ministry of Culture within the programme “Culture of Ethnic Minorities 2009”.
