Portrait of M. Jackson Sold for Undisclosed Sum

On August 18th, 2009, the New York gallery, Vered, sold Andy Warhol’s portrait of Michael Jackson; however, it disclosed neither the sale price nor the buyer. For most people involved with galleries as well as art theoreticians, this portrait represents a fusion of two world giants – the king of pop and the king of pop-art; which will surely not be repeated in the near future. Andy Warhol created a series of portraits of Michael Jackson in 1984 at the request of Time magazine, which, on the front page, published Jackson, pictured through Warhol’s eyes, at the high points of both their careers. Jackson’s portrait was provided in the auction by a private collector, whose identity is also kept secret. Not even when the auction was over, did the owner of the Vered gallery Janet Lehr disclose the final bid, but she pointed out that it significantly exceeded the reserve price USD 800,000.
